Review : Shadow Falls – The Beginning by C.C. Hunter

SFBeginning.jpg

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever.  Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, but it soon becomes clear that the kids at Shadow Falls are far from ordinary. They’re supernatural—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world. Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either.  Or does she?  They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason…if she can only figure out why, and what her burgeoning powers mean.

As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas.  Derek’s a half Fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past.  Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.  As Kylie struggles to make sense of her feelings and her new abilities, the dark side of the supernatural world emerges and makes life a whole lot harder.  An evil enemy lurking in the shadows is about to threaten everything she holds dear…and bring her closer to her destiny.  (From: Goodreads)

*!!!3 Stars!!!*

Kylie went to a 2-month summer camp and found herself actually somehow supernatural. She was trying to figure out what she was. And she also needed to deal with a hell lot of dramas that happened to her.

After two books, she still didn’t know what exactly she was.

I picked up this book was because…well…I have this 2016 summer reading list. I was suppose to start reading this book yesterday. I read YA supernatural. I love Cassandra Clare’s books. However, I guess I am affected by The Mortal Instrument series a little too deep. I hate faes. Okay, let’s not use such a strong word. I dislike faes. I’ll talk more about that soon.

The summer camp setting is just like a normal summer camp. Nonetheless, the story focuses on characters. I have no slightest idea what Kylie was doing during the day except of meals and chat-with-your-campmate-one-on-one for an hour. Oh right, and back to the cabin and roommates fights.

Kylie, our main character, is totally not me at all. I don’t like her. I only like her weird protective strong power. She did things I wouldn’t do. She didn’t do things I’d do. For example, she kept choosing, struggling between Lucas and Derek. She first friend-zoned Derek and then be with him and then got broken up. About Lucas, she insisted they be just friends and yet they kissed a few times. I wouldn’t choose any of them. My reason will be well described down below. Another example, she tried not to talk to Soldier Dude even though she thought he was weird. I would definitely talk to him. (Not that I want to be Sam and Dean. Well…I kinda wanna be like them.)

Lucas, the werewolf, the tall-hot-and-handsome (which is suitable for every male character in this book, duh). He was the ex-neighbour. He was a creeper. He always suddenly showed up here and there. I don’t know why Kylie didn’t think it was sort of spooky, but I know that I’d be pretty careful with this guy. By the way, I think that he cared too much about other people’s (Kylie’s, to be specific) business. He couldn’t seem to keep his hands out of others business. It was like he wanted to know everything. He could be a damn good journalist and he could scoop as much news as he wanted. Oh, and one more thing, he just showed up in Kylie’s life ten years after and still had strong feeling for her? (And she felt the same way? even though at first she thought it was Lucas who killed her cat? Man, this girl is weird.)

Derek, the fae, the (same) tall-hot-and-handsome. I didn’t feel right with this guy once I met him. a) he’s a fae! Faes wouldn’t lie but they don’t tell you the things you wanna hear, either…based on The Mortal Instrument. b) Derek is not a fae! He’s a werewolf. I was sad that he left Teen Wolf. How can he be a fae!

Yeah, anyway, Derek the fae was Kylie’s ex, a.k.a. Trey, look-alike. Therefore, Kylie couldn’t help comparing them with each other (and, of course, she found Derek the fae was better). He was a fool. Even though he knew that Kylie still love Lucas, nah, she just cared about him, but not in THAT way, he still had to thought for a long time to finally shut her out. (Manipulative woman…)

Let’s get into some details now (no details here actually)

“Is he why? Are you two serious?”

Yes. And Yes. Dramas and dramas and dramas. The first triangle is Kylie’s, with Lucas and Derek the fae. The second triangle is Miranda’s (K’s roommate, the witch), with Perry the shapeshifter and Kevin the shapeshifter. And it’s like I can’t be more thrilled to find out more and more love triangle!!!

Music For The Book

It’s funny that I actually do have some music for this book since some sentences reminded me of songs.

1. Charlie Puth – One Call Away
Kylie’s dad told her that he was just one phone call away when he left her with her mom.

2. Selena Gomez – Perfect
Kylie was jealous of Derek the fae being with Mandy (which was just a show for Kylie to get jealous). She was thinking if Mandy touching him or him touching her.

3. Hunter Hayes – Cry With You
Soldier Dude, the ghost, cried when Kylie cried. And this song suddenly sprang up my mind. (though it was kind of creepy that Soldier Dude’s tear was bloody red. Eeeek!)

I give this book three out of four stars because I guess I will still reading the sequel because I want to find out what the hell Kylie was! It’s not that bad since I read it so quickly and didn’t put the book down. Ha ha.

Happy reading ~ 😀
